In a recent educational session for BNI (Business Network International) members, Darren Jamieson shared invaluable insights on becoming more effective in giving referrals by understanding the different types of referral givers: Reactors, Promoters, and Creators. These classifications help members identify how they can contribute to the network and leverage opportunities to support their fellow members.
A Reactor is someone who responds to direct needs. For instance, if a contact needs a service and you know someone within BNI who provides it, you simply connect them. This is the most straightforward type of referral but also the most passive.
Promoters, on the other hand, take a more proactive approach. They listen actively during conversations and suggest connections before being asked. For example, if you’re discussing a project that could benefit from additional services, such as photography or design, recommending a fellow BNI member not only fulfills an immediate need but also showcases your commitment to the network’s growth.
The most dynamic referral giver is the Creator. This person actively seeks out opportunities to connect members with potential clients, often creating new opportunities through innovative thinking and strategic planning. Creators think outside the box to find connections that aren’t immediately obvious, substantially expanding the potential for new business within the network.
Darren emphasizes that all members should strive to be Promoters by regularly ending conversations with the question, “Is there anything else I can help you with?” This simple practice can unveil a multitude of referral opportunities and demonstrates your proactive engagement in supporting your network. By adopting these strategies, BNI members can significantly enhance their referral giving and receive more in return, fostering a thriving business community built on mutual support and collaboration.
